Accessibility statement for Safer Schools

This accessibility statement applies to the Safer Schools website (www.saferschools.online).

This website is run by Salford City Council. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

Salford City Council is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non compliance with the accessibility regulations

PDFs and other documents

Many of our PDFs and other documents don’t meet accessibility standards - for example, they may not be structured so they’re accessible to a screen reader, text alternatives are missing.

Some of our PDFs and other documents are essential to providing our services. For example, some of our resources are PDFs, Word documents or PowerPoint presentations. By November 2025, we plan to either fix these or replace them with accessible versions.

We will work to ensure key new documents meet accessibility standards.

Disproportionate burden

We have not identified anything that qualifies as disproportionate burden as of yet.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

  • Live and audio video - we do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.
  • Online maps - we have added essential information in an accessible format like an address.
  • Third-party content - content on social media sites that is under someone else's control.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We regularly review the accessibility of the site on an ongoing basis. We use this monitoring to identify and fix any new issues that arise.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This website was last tested on 23 May 2025 against the WCAG 2.2 AA standard.

The test was carried out by Salford City Council. The most viewed pages were tested using a suite of browser-based accessibility reporting tools and the NVDA screen reader. We also used the Siteimprove automated testing tool. We tested our main website platform, available at www.saferschools.online
